Certified Mail vs. Registered Mail
By Justin Winter · Updated August 20, 2026
Certified Mail ($12.99–$14.99 with us) proves a document was mailed and tracks it to delivery — the standard choice for legal notices and demand letters. Registered Mail is USPS's highest-security service for valuables, insured up to $50,000 and handled individually, which makes it slower and unnecessary for ordinary documents.
These two get confused constantly because both sound like "the secure option." They solve different problems: Certified Mail proves a document was sent and received. Registered Mail protects something physically valuable in transit.
| Certified Mail | Registered Mail | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Documents needing proof of mailing/delivery | Valuables needing insurance and security |
| Insurance | None built in | Up to $50,000 |
| Speed | 3–5 business days (First-Class speed) | Slower — extra handling at every transfer |
| Typical cost | $6.37–$9.28 in USPS fees | Higher, scales with insured value |
| Typical use | Demand letters, legal notices, IRS mail | Cash, jewelry, valuable original documents |
For nearly everything people search for — a security deposit demand, a lease notice, an IRS response, a cease and desist — Certified Mail is the right service. We only offer Certified, because it is the one that actually fits sending documents.

Common questions
Which one do lawyers and courts expect for legal notices?
Certified Mail, in the vast majority of cases. It is the recognized standard for proof of mailing and delivery on legal correspondence — demand letters, notices to vacate, IRS responses. Registered Mail is rarely required unless a specific statute or contract names it.
Is Registered Mail more secure?
Yes — it is USPS's most secure service, with the piece logged and signed for at every handoff and insurance coverage up to $50,000. That security comes from extra handling, which is also why it takes longer and costs more.
Why is Registered Mail slower?
Because of the chain-of-custody handling — every transfer between USPS employees is logged and signed, which adds time at each step. Certified Mail moves at normal First-Class speed (3–5 business days); Registered Mail can take noticeably longer.
When would I actually need Registered Mail?
When you are mailing something with real physical or monetary value — cash, valuable original documents, coins, jewelry — and want USPS's insurance and highest security. For letters, contracts, and legal notices, Certified is the right tool.
