Two questions decide it: is what you're mailing valuable in itself, or is it a document where what matters is proof it was sent and delivered? Answer both and this recommends Registered Mail, Certified Mail, or plain First-Class — with a real price when Certified or First-Class is the answer.
"Certified or Registered?" is really two different questions wearing one name, and most guides answer neither cleanly because they compare the services in the abstract. This asks about the actual piece you are mailing.

The distinction underneath both questions
Certified Mail proves something was mailed and tracks it to delivery — it is a paperwork service. Registered Mail protects something physically valuable in transit through individual handling and signature at every transfer — it is a custody service. A signed lease and a box of cash both need to arrive safely, but only one of them needs USPS to lock it in a safe overnight, which is what makes Registered Mail slower and priced by declared value instead of flat.
Why the chooser never quotes Registered Mail
Every dollar figure on this site is checked against real pricing so it cannot drift from what a buyer is actually charged. Registered Mail's USPS fee depends on the value you declare for insurance, which this tool has no way to know — so rather than print a number that might be wrong for your item, it points to USPS directly for the current fee schedule.
